    "Music To Touch"

"Musik zum Anfassen - LV Nr. 170001

    Aim of the Course

It is increasingly important in the profession of the musician or instrumental pedagogue that they are not only able to develop an autonomous artistic profile beyond the necessary capabilities in order to perform a piece authentically but also what they need to actively foster music appreciation. The “Music To Touch” project therefore gives participating university students the opportunity
    - to conceive and implement ideas to promote music appreciation under guidance
    - to receive direct and sincere feedback about how convincing their performance is, not only instrumentally
    - to practise the development of their own pedagogical, rhetorical, instrumental and substantive conceptual competence
    - to demonstrate the literature and skills which have already been partially acquired in an extramural, unusual and, for their musical personality, highly demanding performance situation
    - to gain practical experience in fostering enthusiasm for music

    Content of the Course

“Music To Touch” is the name of a concept for the sustainable fostering of music appreciation, which extends over several workshop units, is always newly adjusted to the respective target group and culminates in a public closing concert with all participants. The main concern is an experience-oriented way of promoting music that appeals to the senses and activates creativity.

The Course introduces the student to the skills and knowledge necessary to be a competent workshop/laboratory practitioner and a creative leader. It gives the student the opportunity as an ensemble member to explore the combined role of composer, leader and performer within a creative, participatory workshop environment. The student is expected to engage convincingly in all the following activities as a professional practitioner:
    - Voice, body and percussion work; coordination and communication.
    - Improvisation as a group, generic activity; developing your own musical voice within the group; organically building on the ideas of peer group members.
    - The psychology of leadership; the different levels of facilitating and guiding within a team; leading and being led.

The course consists of the planning and active implementation of
    - at least one music appreciation workshop
    - an instrumental chamber music or solo contribution in a public closing concert outside the university
Because of the didactic nature of all events, a willingness to interact far beyond the instrumental is expected and demanded. The students as well as existing ensembles have the opportunity to present current repertoire or newly rehearsed literature in concert.

    Objektives:

The student is able to lead a heterogeneous group op people and to develop the artistic, musical and collaborative process within the group.
The student shows that he/she is engaged with the wider creative world and is able to translate non-musical ideas into music making contexts.
The student is able to effectively use a diverse range of inspirations; musical styles, visual media, texts; as a point of departure for creating musical material, and also shows a thorough understanding and facility of their artistic technique (instrument/composition/improvisation).
The student is able to demonstrate and develop his/her own, authentic and distinctive ‘musical voice’ with a group of people whilst at the same time accommodating for all the participants in the session
The student demonstrates an understanding of his/her role and responsibilities in relation to the demands of the project and the team they are working with.

This course introduces the student to the skills and knowledge necessary to be a competent workshop/laboratory practitioner and a creative leader. It gives the student the opportunity as an ensemble member to explore the combined role of composer, leader and performer within a creative, participatory workshop environment. The student is expected to engage convincingly in all the following activities as a professional practitioner:
    • Voice, body and percussion work; coordination and communication.
    • Improvisation as a group, generic activity; developing your own musical voice within the group; organically building on the ideas of peer group members.
    • The psychology of leadership; the different levels of facilitating and guiding within a team; leading and being led.

Attendance and Credit of the Course

The course may be attended by all students of the University of Music and Performing Arts, especially those following concert, rhythm or instrumental (voice) education studies (IGP) and is credited as an elective in their respective course of study.
In connection with the “New Directions in Music Appreciation” („Neue Wege der Musikvermittlung“) seminar, it may be credited as the “Fostering Music Appreciation Concepts - Projects” („Musikvermittlung: Konzepte - Projekte) module. Both courses consist of 2 semester-week-hours (SWS) and are offered in the winter and summer semesters.
The Course “Music To Touch” is open for BA and MA students. The Theory is only for MA students. The theoretical part "Concepts"(Prof. R. Smilde) underpins and adds to the practical project led by Flosdorf.
